This week in the Beyond Management Initiative session we had Shri. Parthiban IRS additional Directorate General (ADG) vigilance south zone Chennai, and Shri.G.Ravindranath, Commissioner of GST & Central Excise, Chennai Outer. The speech covered the Consequence of corruption, how we should be zero tolerant for corruption and how to play fair. Central Vigilance Commission has been conducting “Vigilance Awareness Week” to create awareness to people against corruption.

Following the chief guest’s introduction, the Pledge for the “Vigilance Awareness Week” was said by all in the hall.

Shri.Parthiban commenced his speech asking the audience what was meant by vigilance? Answering the same he said, vigilant is to be attentive. CBIT (Central Board of Income Tax) has divided people into four types 40 % of people who complains about tax, another 20 % who are forced to pay tax, another 20 % pay tax if their competitor pays, and the final 20 % of people who pay tax unless laid heavily. He said that the behavior aspect of the tax payer should change.

He continued saying that his team was trying their best to bring back the officers to honest ways so that tax becomes robust. Most of the taxations have become online based. He said that if the cost of transaction reduces the economy will grow. He continued by saying World Bank has ranked India at 77th position due to the trading across the borders and because of reduced cost by GST.

He said that If there was a law, it should simply be followed. He added saying, we should be fair and be consistent in our behavior, integrated and reliable, independent and judicious in our thought, should see both sides of the coin and decide as equality in law and principle. These principles help us to develop as a top professional manager.

The second speech was given by commissioner Shri. G.Ravindranath. He commenced his talk by citing Mahathma Gandhi’s famous line “Be the change you want to see”. He gave the example of Ceasars wife Pompiea and how Ceaser trusted her in a critical situation, saying “Ceasers wife must be above suspicion”. He said that we meet at an average of 10000 people in our life time and if we change 10 people and they inturn change 10 people, it will be easy to cover the entire population in 3 generations for better India and for this we should take help from others like family or friends.

He said we should not be dejected by failure inturn we should take risk to move forward. He added we should not backdown from the sharks of life. He said ethics is the ability to distinguish between right and wrong. He insisted that we should take ethical decisions even when no one’s watching us.

He mentioned that GST is an ethical tax as its one common law for the entire country. He added that we should be responsible without expecting anything in return. He added the items that’s not under GST are Natural gas, Crude oil, Aviation turbine fuel. He said tax in Sweden was reduced following which people went on a strike fearing reduction in the quality of life since government will not provide necessary service as before. Thus he said that taxation is good for the country. So that government can provide free Health care and education services. Taxes are used for improving economic activity and thus increases the purchasing power.
